Physical Education (PE) and Sports Premium Information

Physical Education (PE)

At Elmgrove, our intent in teaching Physical Education is to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact on their own physical health and well-being. We want all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. PE can challenge and promote self-esteem whilst teaching children how to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. Within dance, it will allow children to explore their personal and spiritual identity.

The intent is for our PE curriculum to develop:

  • An interest in PE and a willingness to join in with a positive attitude
  • A healthy lifestyle, being aware of the benefits of a balanced diet and regular exercise
  • The ability to swim at least 25 metres and know how to remain safe in and around water
  • To take initiative and become young leaders, organising, evaluating and motivating others
  • Our school Golden Values (Respect, Commitment, Kindness, Responsibility) through the practice of sport

We implement these ideas by:

  • Having a broad, ambitious curriculum that allows pupils to practice a wide range of sports throughout the school life
  • Having specialist PE coaches who deliver high quality teaching and learning to all pupils across the school
  • Using part of our Sports Premium funding to provide swimming lessons, specialist coaches and subsidise sport workshops and trips
  • Providing opportunities to be active during the school day and through extracurricular activities.
  • Training over 15 Sports Leaders every year

As a result, at Elmgrove:

  • All pupils have the opportunity to play competitive sport through our intra-school competitions, with an increasing number of them representing the school in local Harrow competitions
  • All pupils in Year 3 and 4 receive swimming lessons for a year and are familiar in basic principles of water safety
  • Children enjoy an active and engaging playground that offers a range of sporting activities, led by students and rewarding positive behaviours
  • Families are well and regularly informed of sports and healthy lifestyle opportunities in the local area

Sports Premium Funding

At Elmgrove Primary School and Nursery, we believe that PE and Sport can play a vital role in a child’s personal development, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better when channelled the right way.

We welcomed the Government’s announcement in June 2013 to provide primary schools with additional funding to improve the provision of PE and Sport in schools and have been gradually working hard to raise the profile of PE and Sport within our school. In July 2017, the government announced the Sport Premium funding would be doubling due to the huge success and impact the additional funding has had across the nation.

The whole school is fully committed to using this extra resource in developing high quality PE lessons, up-skilling teachers to improve subject knowledge and confidence levels, increasing extracurricular sports club provision, providing more competitive opportunities and encouraging young people to lead active and healthy lifestyles on a daily basis.

Utilising the positive power PE and sport can have on an individual it is our mission to ensure every child has access to quality coaching to help them realise their maximum potential.
