Year Group Updates - Years 3 & 4

Year 3 Update

This week in English, we started our new class text, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The story is about a giant metal man who mysteriously appears and surprises the people around him. We are currently exploring the book, making predictions, and getting to know the characters and events. Over the coming weeks, the children will use their understanding of the story to write their own newspaper reports.

In Maths, we have begun our new topic on shape. The children have been learning to identify and describe different types of angles and lines, including right angles, parallel lines, and perpendicular lines. They have enjoyed investigating shapes and spotting these features in the world around them.

In DT, our topic this half term is bread making. We will be learning about different types of bread, where they come from, and the ingredients used to make them. Later in the half term, the children will have the opportunity to design and bake their own simple loaf of bread.

This week, we also had a visit from a nurse who delivered an assembly about healthy eating and keeping active. The children learned about the importance of a balanced diet, how too much sugar and fat can affect our health, and why regular exercise is important for our bodies and minds.

Year 4 Update

Welcome back to the final term of the academic year.

In English, we have been learning about non-chronological reports, linked to our whole- class reader, The Last Bear. The children have been identifying and exploring key features of this text type, including headings, subheadings, captions, pictures and factual information.

In Maths, we have started a unit of work on angles and turns. Children have been looking at right angles, obtuse and acute angles. They have also been looking at different types of turn like quarter turn clock-wise and anticlockwise.

In Reading, we have started a new class novel, The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. The children are already thoroughly enjoying the story and are engaging enthusiastically with the characters and themes.

In Science, we have begun learning about food chains, including predators, consumers and producers. Most children have shown confidence in drawing food chains and using arrows correctly to show the direction of energy transfer.

In History, we have started our topic on the History of Harrow and have been exploring different sources of evidence. The children particularly enjoyed examining the large historical display recently installed in school opposite Miss Neary’s office. It generated lots of interest and discussion.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The children completed the Multiplication Tables Check to the best of their ability. A secure knowledge of times tables supports many areas of mathematics, and we are proud of the effort they put into the assessment.

Trips and Educational Visits

Please ensure that consent is provided promptly when educational visits are arranged. Timely responses help us to organise trips effectively. We are always grateful for parent volunteers and welcome adult helpers whenever possible.

Home Learning

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their weekly home learning, including:

  • Spelling activities on EdShed
  • Tasks set on MyMaths
  • Reading on Oxford Reading Buddy
  • Practice on TT Rockstars

TT Rockstars has recently become very competitive amongst some classes and children, which has been fantastic to see!

Thank you for your continued support.

Have a wonderful weekend.
