Year Group Updates - Years 3 & 4

Year 3 Update

Last week, Year 3 had a wonderful time visiting Headstone Manor Museum, bringing their History topic on the Stone Age to life!

During an exciting, hands-on workshop, the children learned about the Late Neolithic hunter-gatherers and early farmers who lived in the Harrow area thousands of years ago. They explored ancient objects, examined historical evidence and took part in practical activities to discover how people lived, worked and survived during this fascinating period. The children also had opportunities to ask questions, share their ideas and investigate the past like real historians.

The visit was a fantastic way to build on their classroom learning and deepen their understanding of the Stone Age. It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic as they discovered more about the people who once lived right here in our local area. What a brilliant historical adventure!

Year 4 Update

It is hard to believe that the first half term has already come to an end. The Year 4 team are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into the new academic year and the enthusiasm they have shown towards their learning.

This half term has been packed with memorable experiences and exciting learning opportunities. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Cassiobury Park, took part in an engaging Black History Month Workshop, and demonstrated their creativity by designing and making packaging as part of their Design and Technology project.

In Mathematics, the children have been developing their understanding of place value, addition, and subtraction.

In English, they have explored a range of text types and have written descriptions, letters, poems, and stories, while working hard to improve their vocabulary and sentence structure.

In Science, the children have been learning about the three states of matter and carried out a fair test to investigate how chocolate melts.

In Religious Education, they explored the concept of forgiveness and how it is reflected across major world religions.

During PSHE, the focus has been on understanding values, rules, and characteristics that help keep everyone safe and support positive relationships.

In Physical Education, the children have developed their skills through swimming and gymnastics lessons.

Our Geography learning centred around rivers, including the water cycle, the journey of a river, and the importance of rivers around the world.

In Computing, the children learned about computer networks and how to stay safe online. They explored safe search engines such as Swiggle and Kiddle and discussed the importance of making sensible choices when using the internet.

We are delighted with the progress the children have made so far and are pleased to share some examples of their wonderful work in this newsletter.

Home Learning Reminders

We encourage all children to complete some home learning each day. This should include:

  • Reading a physical book.
  • Reading online using Oxford Reading Buddy.
  • Completing tasks on MyMaths.
  • Practising times tables on TTRockStars (TTRS).
  • Learning spellings and completing activities in their yellow homework books.

Our whole-year-group writing target is to help children write sentences that make sense and are engaging for the reader. We are encouraging children to use:

  • Powerful adjectives
  • Similes
  • Alliteration
  • Interesting sentence openers

Regular reading and writing practice at home will have a significant impact on children's confidence and success in their writing.

Trips and Workshops

A huge thank you to the 60 families who have already made a voluntary contribution towards our upcoming trips and workshops. Your support is greatly appreciated.

To partly cover the costs, we are aiming for contributions from at least 75 families. Any shortfall cannot be subsidised by the school and the coach trip will be cancelled and £15 refunded. A gentle reminder that the deadline for contributions is tomorrow.

⚠️ Safety Message – Roblox

Children of Year 4 age should not have an account or be accessing age- inappropriate games or content. We strongly encourage all parents and carers to check their child's online activity and discuss online safety regularly.

Thank you for your continued support this half term. We wish all our Year 4 families a safe, restful, and enjoyable half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning.

Best wishes,

The Year 4 Team 🌟
